Mr. Smith has current homeowners coverage on his home for $100,000 and has a $500 deductible.  The value Mr. Smith needs to properly insure his home is $172,000.  If Mr. Smith has a fire and the damage is  $17,000, Mr. Smith is going to share in the loss.  Based on the below formula, Mr. Smith would receive $9383 from his company.  The "Co-Insurance" for the $17,000 loss is $7,617.  This is why it is important to insure your home for 100% of its replacement cost.
